The space was originally three separate rooms; a kitchen, pantry and a scullery. The external wall was a run of individual windows that looked out onto the grey wall adjoining the property. The area outside the windows was essentially a “Dead Space”. The space itself was one metre wide. The owners of the property wanted to maximise the internal space and turn the three internal rooms into a social living area for family and friends.
BUILD
We organised a structural engineer to calculate the necessary beams that would be required to support the building once the external and internal walls had been removed. Once the beams were in place we were able to remove the walls and open up the area. We built a new wall which extended the footprint of the building by one metre along the length of the building. Skylights were added to maximise the amount of daylight that the room received, without them there was only one main window at the end of the room which, would have made the space quite dark. Large glass doors were placed at the end of the extension and these open out onto the garden which, helps to make this space flow from external to internal, great for sunny days and social activities.
The owners were very pleased with the finished project and now use the space for a multitude of family activities; from homework, to a glass of wine by the fire and entertaining friends.
